Co-Founder & Former Director of The Ark Clothing Co.
Jenny Layton is the co-founder and former director of The Ark Clothing Co., a womens fashion label established in 1990.
Prior to The Ark, Jenny established and ran Reflections Gallery for 10 years in Melbourne, known for the exhibition and promotion of emerging Australian artists and its quality framing of objects and art.
With the arrival of children , the sale of Reflections and a chance meeting with fashion designer/patternmaker Christine Metcalfe , an instant friendship and highly successful business partnership began lasting 26 years. Together they established the Oz Ark label ( children’s wear) , later to become The Ark Clothing Co.( women’s wear). Inspired by any creative thought or concept, especially if contributing to a womans feeling of wellbeing and value, fuelled a desire to continually develop The Ark into a meaningful fashion label with plenty of real soul.
Uniting the complementary talents of the two founders the business started with a contribution of $200 of “housekeeping” money and morphed into a company with a large turnover and no debt. The Arks greatest achievement however, was being 100% Australian designed and made, establishing key ongoing social enterprise projects and supporting/ collaborating with young creatives establishing their careers in the industry.
After the sale of The Ark in 2016, Jenny continues her involvement in the fashion industry as a member of the board for the Council of Textiles and Fashion Australia and a member of their steering committee for their “Curated” project. Jenny also continues to work as a small business consultant and on behalf of the Marninwarntikura Womens Resource Centre in the Kimberly, assisting in developing their indigenous social enterprise business arm. She also has recently established the Earthed Foundation, connecting people , passion and knowledge in philanthropic projects.
